Yves Chaland (FR)

Chaland's first retrospective in the German-speaking world follows the tracks of his most important characters Petit Albert, Bob Fish, Spirou, Freddy Lombard and Adolphus Claar. Chaland is a master of the ligne claire which he modernised with his dynamic linework. As a child he was obsessed with the Franco-Belgian comics of the golden age of the 1950s from which he developed his unique style. He is one of the few comic artists who manage to conceive a comic as a Gesamtkunstwerk. Style, atmosphere, décor, design, characters and the plot follow the grammar of the comic. Chaland's stories play out in different subplots in which the artist excellently manages to depict society and reveal its deficiencies.
