Independent market, guests

The Lucerne Comics Festival not only exhibits selected comic artists' works, but also encourages integration and dialogue. Fumetto's Independent Market sets the stage for such interaction. The artists come together with a panel of specially invited international guests, guaranteeing an intensive and beneficial exchange of opinions and information within the independent comic-scene. This once again proves Fumetto's reputation as an important melting pot for freelance artists.

Ben Katchor

Ben Katchor has been drawing for the well-known "Raw"magazine since the seventies. Originally inspired by the early US-punk scene, he is known for his work with Metropolis, Escape and the weekly comic strips "Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer" and "The Cardboard Valise", which was published in around 12 American newspapers. The New York Times wrote: "The most poetic, deeply layered artist ever to draw a comic". www.katchor.com

Paulo Patricio was born in Angola in 1973. Apart from his work with various Fanzines (e.g. the Cru), he was also heavily involved in organisational areas. In 1995 his own mini-comic "Com a mesma moeda" appeared in the Editores Independent Associados (EIA), of which he was a co-founder. Oliver Douzou was born in 1963 and has published countless children's books with Editions du Rouergue. His work as an author and illustrator seems to be just not quite enough for him. Maria Isabel Carvalhos

Maria Isabel Carvalhos, at the age of 23, already had her comics published in various magazines. The young art student has also released numerous Fanzines in small numbers, e.g. "Stad", Almanac", "I-Scream", and "Alingua". Nova Comix published Carvalhos' "Eat & Spit" album. She continues her support of the Portugese comic's scene by working as a co-organiser on Comics-Festivals in Porto and Lisbon.

Thierry Van Hasselt is from Brussels, Belgium, and will be honouring Fumetto 2002 on the Independent Market. He is a member of the Belgian ensemble Fréon, famous for their beautifully presented Frigobox line, of which ten editions have already been released. "Kühlbox" comics serve as a platform on which artists from all different fields are presented. Hasselt was awarded with the honourable Prix Alph'Art Etranger in Angouléme for his wonderful monotype Album "Gloria Lopez".
