Program

16.00–19.00Schwarz auf WeissSymposium

Toni AREAL
12.+13.3.2020

Fumetto goes crazy with DJ*anes MRackhelectors!

13.30AmpoReading

Maskenliebhabersaal

The Ampo reading comprises two lists based on a selection of texts from El Eternauta (1957-59). In Héctor G. Oesterheld's graphic novel there are always adjectivisations of two pertinent elements: Them and the snow. In a three-part synchronised reading a game of crossovers begins, and the meeting of the two elements unites to form a single common message.

14.00El Eternauta: The Restless Time TravelerPodium discussion

Maskenliebhabersaal

El Eternauta is a survivor from the future. With a small group of resistance fighters, he defends Buenos Aires against invaders from outer space. One night, he appears to the illustrator who records his story for posterity in an extensive graphic novel. The series from the 1950s by Héctor G. Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López anticipated the dictatorship in Argentina. It is still read, published in new editions, studied, and exhibited today. What is it that keeps El Eternauta from resting even after 60 years?

Discover unknown worlds! Graphic arts make use of humans’ ability to recognize faces, characters, and animals in structures they encounter. Fantastical creatures or immense landscapes appear unexpectedly in clouds, in the grain of wood, or in coffee stains. The blot is the root of painting. Once you understand it, everything else is a piece of cake. Illustrator Vanessa Karré and Friedrich Weltzien, specialist for aesthetic theories of the blot, will take you on a journey from the origins of the blot to contemporary practice. Suitable for beginners and pros.

15.30Hot Stories – Eroticism in the “Ninth Art”Podium discussion

Maskenliebhabersaal

Drawings are magical. They can create a distance to events and make them digestible, or they can tease out emotions. Comics can arouse desires or be provocative. For ten years, the erotic cult series BD-CUL has been inflaming passions in lighthearted and ingenious ways. Simon Hanselmann’s depressive transgender witch Megg drops her clothes. Artists and other creative minds from the hot side of the cultural scene talk about the blunt representation of desire. What are the freedoms and where are the limits? How can the medium of drawing, how can art show sexuality in thoughtful ways? Where can it be frivolous and push the boundaries, and where does censorship step in?

13.00–15.30Futures of ComicsSymposium

Maskenliebhabersaal

Symposium | Part 1

At the symposium Futures of Comics, Fumetto presents innovative protagonists of the international comic scene. They share their visions and highlight details from their work spheres and their approaches. They delve deeply into issues, they don’t shy away from change, and they are already shaping the future of the “ninth art.” Questions of preserving and sharing information and issues surrounding comics as research objects are more important today than ever – and potential solutions are as diverse as comic art itself.

Guests: Dušan Barok (CZ), founder of Monoskop; Laura Caraballo (ARG), comic scholar/curator; Un Faulduo (ARG), artist collective; Morvandiau (F), comic artist; Alexandra Zsigmond (US), artist/former Art Director at the New York Times Sunday Review

16.00–18.30CensorshipSymposium

Part 2: 4pm–6.30pm
Censorship

Censorship is an attempt to silence somebody’s voice – images are painted over or destroyed, comics are removed from shelves or banned outright. Artists are fired or they and their publishers are sued. The line between what is or isn’t censorship is often intentionally blurred. In part 2 of the symposium, comic artists from Switzerland, Greece, Colombia, Turkey, and England talk about their very different experiences with attempts to intimidate or silence them. In their contributions, they ask whether different types of censorship are comparable and discuss the best strategies in dealing with censorship.

18.30Apocalypse mon amourPerformance

Molo Keller

«Dear Mon-keys, I try to write you a letter, I try to write you for later.» - We are alone with the protagonist. There is no one else around. The noise is getting louder and his lines are getting under his skin. Desperation penetrates through cracks in the walls. Typos are inconsequential in farewell letters. Geneva artist duo K&A lays siege to our senses with apocalyptic poetry. In the orbit of time traveller El Eternauta we become witnesses of the last stage of the present-day.

20.30Horse Mania: LivePerformance

Simon Hanselmann (AUS/US)

It's like a curse. Sometimes you just can't get enough of trashy but stylish performances. When Simon Hanselmann dresses up, adjusts his décolleté to perfection and tugs his lip before he starts playing, Werewolf, Owl and friends pale with envy. Only Megg laughs up her sleeve. Because the way she is flaunting herself she cannot be overlooked by any passerby. Megg, Mogg & Owl unplugged – a unique opportunity to experience star artist Simon Hanselmann live.

09.00–18.00The net of space and timeFilm

Bourbaki Panorama Luzern

Opening reception:
Wed, April 1, 6:30pm

A couple of algorithms dressed up as ravers blare out residual code and dance at the limit of the system. Surreal-poetic endeavours intertwine in an endless loop. Our generation makes its net through time and even a small spider balancing on a fine thread causes massive upheaval.

Les Hirondelles de Kaboul CH/FR, 2019, 80 min
Director: Zabou Breitman, Illustration: Eléa Gobbé-Mévellec

Summer 1998 in Kabul. Zunaira is young and full of zest for life, a hunger that is anything but easy to appease: the cinemas and theatres in her Taliban-occupied hometown are closed and the university lies in ruins. There is love of course. But love is also full of obstacles. This is a story of oppression, the struggle for a dignified life, and the power of women, which is still as relevant today as it was when the film was made

15.30The Travel Bug and Its Side EffectsPodium discussion

Maskenliebhabersaal

Comic artists need an incredible amount of perseverance. They turn over ideas in their mind, they polish scenarios, discard details, reduce or embellish, balance text and image until it all adds up. They usually spend endless hours alone at their drawing table. Then they go outside in search of inspiration and new paths. And sometimes, they go really far away. Illustrators talk about their experiences in foreign countries and about encounters with colleagues from all corners of the globe.
